By the time we got back to Williams it was almost 6PM, so we stopped in for dinner at a nearby restaurant and then walked around the souvenir shops for a bit, before heading home. The kids left the next day for home and we got back to working.
The kids go back to school EARLY around here! By August 15th, the kids were back in school and work slowed waaay down, it was unbelievable. Even though we are a destination park, most of our customers are here to see the Canyon and we get A LOT of foreign visitors, still, we get a lot of local visitors as well, from Phoenix, Kingman and Lake Havasu City, coming up here to escape the very hot desert heat. When their kids started back to school, our business suffered. Last year, I heard it was busier, because when the kids start back to school, that is when the snowbirds start coming north to visit. Even Labor Day was not sold out, we still had places to rent. I think this has to be the only campground we have ever worked at that the holidays are not sold out weeks in advance, it's weird.
Anyway, two weeks after we visited with the kids, we were off to see the North Rim. We decided, as before, to drive through the South Rim and this time, we stopped at some of the viewpoints on the way through, including the Desert Tower. The first time we ever saw the Canyon, back in 1990, I remember stopping near a tower, but, when we walked in, I don't remember it looking like this. I also have to tell you on our way down the path, I tripped and fell over a stupid rise in the asphalt and fell on my left knee, tearing my pants and skinning my knee. I was mostly embarrassed that I did that in front of people and I really was alright, except my knee hurt...duh!!! I managed to snag a couple of bandaids from a manager in the gift shop and after cleaning it with an alcohol pad, I was fine.
