In the early 1800's, there was a man by the name of Gordon, who made an agreement with a Chickasaw Indian chief to open a trading post and a ferry on the Duck River. While he was gone much of the time on military expeditions with General Andrew Jackson, his wife ran the trading post in his absence. Now, I was thinking, Mrs. Gordon must have been one tough lady, she was in the middle of Indian Territory and she ran a trading post, plus lodging for the travelers coming through across the ferry. And that's another thing, who was running the ferry while her husband was away and she's running the show up at the house? I'm sure she must have hired someone to do that, but, still, that was a rough life for her with no other female to talk to for months on end....
